2012 Opener….Point University @ West Georgia

So amped to finally be talking about a game.

Point University finished 2-5 as a club team in 2011 with wins over Columbus State 52-12 and Gray Military Academy 21-14. This is their first year playing as an NAIA member. Point actually opened the 2012 season 8/25. They lost to Edward Waters College 66-34. Edward Waters finished 4-6 in 2011 with wins over teams that finished a combined 6-31. You may remember VSU once beat them 70-6. Still, Im surprised they put that many points on the board.

The entire Point roster is freshmen & sophomores, as they’ve only been playing football for two years. If that sounds like a mismatch keep in mind most of our top players are juniors and sophomores. We have 6 Seniors that are all solid contributors. Compare this to schools like North Alabama and Delta State that depend heavily on JUCO & D-I transfers; I believe UNA lost something like 18 starters from last year’s team.

Point have some girth on the offensive line with a 330lb OT that looks pretty good on his high school Youtube. Defensively, calling their down linemen undersized is being kind, maybe one guy over 250 lbs. The LB’s are mostly in the 200-220 lb range. They will be a busy bunch come Saturday and a very sore bunch come Sunday. The secondary will have to stay close to support the run which should open up some passing lanes.

There’s no way two ways about it. This one is going to get ugly. Everybody with a helmet plays a solid quarter at least. Heck, we might have to blow red shirts just keep things from getting criminal. This is the kind of game we need before playing Tusculum. Last year the offense never got going and we lost a very winnable game. Losing two of our top receivers within the first five minutes didn’t help matters though.

Interestingly, I’ve seen the first depth chart and Dallas Dickey has moved ahead of Adam Holley as backup QB. He must have been very impressive to have been bypassed a Sophomore with less than a month of practice. I don’t know how much it really means though. Our depth charts tend to change a bunch from first game to last. We are still playing a lot – and I mean A LOT – of freshmen/sophomores. As good as I think this team will be 2013 should be a playoff team for sure.

I think the final score can be any number Dickey wants it to be. I just think he will remind the guys at half-time that 3-4 years ago Point University was us…losing to UNA 53-0, Henderson 49-10, DSU 68-10. No need to rub it in but if they can’t stop our 3rd team there’s not much you can do. I don’t think he will tell anyone to run out of bounds when they get what may be their one shot to play this year.

A big home opener win should really get the fan base energized. We have a very tough schedule with five ranked teams on our plate.

My prediction – West Georgia 56, Point 6
