According to Football Scoop, new University of West Georgia Football Head Coach Will Hall has found his Defensive Coordinator and his name is Scott Symons, former Defensive Coordinator at Arkansas Tech.

When I first heard about the (alleged hire) I was not very jazzed about it. It appears Symons only had one year of Coordinator experience under his belt and in that year ATU went 5-6. I thought surely UWG can attract a better candidate than that. Obviously Coach Hall knows what he’s doing and anyone seems better than Jody Allen at this point. Let’s dig into this thing a bit more.

I compared ATU’s defensive stats in 2013 versus 2012 and they were significantly better in some key areas. Here’s the tale of the tape, short version:

  • 2012 2013
  • Scoring 425 294
  • Rush yards 2575 1811
  • Avg per rush 5.5 4.2
  • Rush yards/game 234.1 164.6
  • Rushing TDs 32 17
  • Total offense 5451 4431
  • Ttl yds/game 495.5 402.8
  • 3rd down Pct 48% 35.9%

ATU had identical 5-6 records both years but surely if the offense had improved as much as the defense did they may have been a playoff team. So he has the ability to come in and have a big impact very early. No doubt Hall noticed that and will count on Symons doing just that in Carrollton.

Even prior that Symons worked at Harding Univ. as the co-defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator in 2010-2011. Per the harding website in 2011 “Harding’s defense led the Great American Conference in total defense and sacks and ranked second in rushing defense and turnovers forced.” That’s a good sign. We couldn’t stop anyone running the ball the last two years.

This still isn’t a hire that bowls me over but I am on board with it. I think we will perform well once Halls brings in some size and aggressiveness along the front line.
