D2football.com 2014 Pre-season All-America team

D2football.com released their 2014 Pre-season All-America team and in true homer fashion I have to say I disagree that West Georgia Punter James Dugan should have been excluded. He beat the guys that made it in almost every statistical category.

The First Team Punter was Andrew Cerett, California (PA) (JR); Scott Groner, Missouri Western State (SR) made the second team.

Here’s the tale of the tape.

Cerett Groner Dugan
Average 43.1 42.6 42.7
50+ yards 10 9 10
Inside 20 13 13 16
Longest 79 61 62

He clearly bests the Second Team Guy.

Offensive Line

The Offensive line is much deeper this year. We lost two of the best OL we’ve ever had in Brandon White and William Wright, both All-Americans. To fill the void we’ve brought in three All-Conference JUCO guys. Last year we had guys providing backup in multiple spots. For example Garrison Ushery was the backup at Center while he was starting at RG. Redshirt Freshman Austin Kastl was the backup at both Tackle spots after Cortez Hoskins went down. We had true Freshmen backing up both Guards.

This year it looks like we’ve only got one Underclassman in the (my) top 8 guys and that’s Kastl, who played in 7 games with 1 start under his belt. He’s put on some much needed weight too. I think this group could break the UWG team rushing record set by last years team.

This is how we look from my unofficial view:

  • Garrison Ushery OL 6-1 335 Sr. 2014 Pre-season All-American
  • Quincy Awa-Dubose OL 6-2 320 Sr. 2014 Pre-Season All-GSC
  • Somto Okeke OL 6-3 305 Sr. Five 2013 starts, 675lb Squat
  • Orion Awa-Dubose OL 6-1 310 Jr. JUCO All-Conf
  • Taylor Beyer OL 6-5 335 Jr. JUCO All-Conf
  • Cal Ibanez OL 6-5 320 Jr. JUCO All-Conf
  • Austin Kastl OL 6-5 290 So. One 2013 start
  • Jodece Smith OL 6-2 315 Jr.

We have been pathetic over the years recruiting Offensive Linemen. Over the last 3-4 years we’ve signed 6-7 high school Offensive linemen every and year and not one lasted more than two years. The last good OL class we’ve had was 2010, when we signed William Wright, Brandon White, Cortez Hoskins and Somto Okeke. All those guys turned into multi-year starters because THEY HAD TO. That is a pretty poor record. Every other one washed out (I won’t pretend to know why). At least 3 of them were All-State so it’s not like Dickey just picked some warm bodies at random.

We’ve got to get better at that because that is a lot of wasted scholarship money….til then I’m just fine with going the JUCO route.

Football season is here!

Time to crank this blog up and let The Will Hall Era begin!

I’ve been out to watch the team practice and let me tell you…this team is for real. There are some real beasts out there and we have depth at just about every position. I almost feel like we could field two teams and the second would still as competitive as we’ve been in recent years.

They say a new broom sweeps clean and Coach Halls broom certainly has. Out of 100 names on the 2014 roster 58 appear to be new. A few standouts from last year have refused to let themselves be shoved aside, most notably Nathan Teter, Alex Armah, David Dupaty, Tyrell Adams and Marcus Sayles.

Hall has put his stamp on the defensive side. There are at least three guys that would be competing for playing time at the FBS level. There can be no doubt this will be the most dominant defensive front in West Georgia history. What I’ve seen easily eclipses even the 2005 team with future pros Odell Willis, Kelvin Morris and Brandon Jamison. As long as these guys do what they’re told and play like a team this will be a banner year.

The offense is just as loaded, if not more. I’ll talk about them in the next post.
